Preliminary Program

Overview: Medical and Surgical Tracks for 2025

The National continues to evolve based on your feedback. This year, we are offering a single track in the morning highlighting our most popular topics, so attendees don’t have to choose between two sessions they want to attend. We have also shortened some track times in the afternoon to help prevent fatigue from setting in.

Beginning and ending times for the daily educational program schedule are listed below. The schedule for each day includes breaks, which are not identified here.

Thursday, July 24 • 7:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Friday, July 25 • 7:00 a.m.– 5:15 p.m.
Saturday, July 26 • 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
Sunday, July 27 • 7:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Opening Address: Keeping Athletes Moving

Thursday, July 24 • 3:00–4:00 p.m.

Keynote Speaker: Dimitri A. Christakis, MD, MPH

The National’s opening session, “Keeping Athletes Moving,” will shine a light on the work podiatrists do to keep all athletes—regardless of their health and ability status—active and mobile. APMA is thrilled to welcome Special Olympics Chief Health Officer Dimitri A. Christakis, MD, MPH, as the keynote speaker for this session. In this position, Dr. Christakis is responsible for the health programs for five million athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities in more than 190 countries and oversees health programming of Special Olympics including prevention, assessment, training, and health system strengthening. He has a holistic view of health that encompasses the physical, mental, emotional, and social state of all of our athletes and their families.

Dr. Christakis is the George Adkins Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington and the editor in chief of JAMA Pediatrics. He graduated from Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and he completed a pediatric residency followed by a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholarship at the University of Washington, from which he received his MPH.

Special Guest Speaker: Coach Lance Harter

The opening session will also include special guest speaker Coach Lance Harter. Harter served as head coach of the University of Arkansas women’s cross-country and track and field programs for 33 years, ending his tenure with the 2022–23 season. In that time, he became the most successful coach in Southeastern Conference history, amassing seven NCAA championships and 45 SEC championships. His athletes combined to earn 47 Academic All-America honors. At the national level, he has been a coach of Team USA five times, including serving as an assistant coach at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona and head coach at the 1999 World Championships.

Oral and Poster Abstracts

The National highlights cutting-edge research through its oral and poster abstracts. Poster abstracts will be displayed Thursday through Saturday in the foyer outside of the educational program and registration areas instead of the exhibit hall this year. The poster abstracts symposium will be held on Saturday afternoon and selected oral abstracts will be presented on Saturday morning.
