  • Sep 9, 2024

CMS and Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation (WPS) are informing the public of a possible data breach involving their health information or any other personally identifiable information (PII) in relation to Medicare that was provided by WPS.

It has been discovered that there was a security vulnerability within the MOVEit software, which is a third-party application created by Progress Software and used by WPS to transfer files for CMS. Individual providers’ data may have been compromised in connection with Medicare administrative services provided by WPS. This breach may have also impacted those who are not Medicare beneficiaries but who have still received care from these providers. Other organizations may have also been impacted by this security breach.

CMS and WPS have notified over 946,801 Medicare beneficiaries whose information may have been compromised, assuring them that the agencies are taking the necessary steps in response to this incident.
