APMA Submits Comments to US Dept. of Education in Support of CPME

  • Jun 20, 2023

APMA submitted comments to the US Department of Education (USDE) on June 20, in response to a recently released USDE proposed rule that would require institutions to “provide students with geographically accessible clinical, or externship opportunities related to and required for completion of the credential or licensure in a recognized occupation within 45 days of the successful completion of other required coursework,” in order to begin and continue to participate in any Title IV or Higher Education Act program.

APMA’s comments were submitted in support of the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME), requesting clarification if these requirements would apply to medical school students. If the USDE did intend for these requirements to apply to medical schools, APMA joined CPME in strongly recommending reconsideration, as they will significantly and negatively impact schools of podiatric medicine that require as part of their education clerkship and externship placements within their third and fourth years of schooling.
